After a week visiting in the UK and my mum visiting for a week I have been reminded of lots of songs.

This one has quickly become a favourite with baby girl. A nice swinging melody and only two verses to remember - result.

The Wheels On the Bus

Baby C received a key toy for Christmas and the blue key plays this tune. When she hears it she gives a big smile and good wiggle to it.
The great thing about this song is that it is easy to add new verses, just think of something on the bus and the sound it would make.
Wipers swishing, horns honking, money clinking and so on.

A word about the youtube clip - I couldn't find an English version, only American.
We used to sing that the wheels on the bus went round and round all day long.
Also I'm not sure about the laughing people. The mothers used to go chatter chatter chatter and there weren't any daddy's on the bus when I was little.
Having said that it does have Roger Daltry in it, so that makes up for a lot.

From Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, a beautiful song for one of my very best friends, Lis who gave birth to her baby girl on Wednesday morning.

I also like to hum this to my baby girl when we are relaxing or maybe waiting for a burp.

My mum sent me this CD for Christmas, thanks mum. While we are nap training and we are both a bit frazzled I play this while Baby C plays on her playmat. Nice and calming, though somewhat spoilt by her singing chicken toy.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

As sung by Judy Garland in the not very festive Meet Me In St. Louis . This is a wonderful song, bitter and sweet at the same time.

I sing it to baby because we are far away from my family and I like the lines;

"someday soon we all will be together, if the fates allow.
Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow..."

There is also a great swing version by Ella Fitzgerald which is just a little bit more upbeat.

I just remembered this one the other day. Another easy one, two verses, or just repeat the first one lots if you are scared of crocodiles.
I sit baby on my lap and row her back and forth. As she is four months she is able to hold up her head and is getting stonger each day so this helps her with learning to sit up by herself.

This could also be a great bathtime song with all the splashing involved in rowing.

We play this on the play mat, we enlist the help of Tiger, Oliphant and Brown Dog soft toys who groove along with us. Oliphant likes to make a small trumpet solo in the middle.

Head Shoulders Knees And Toes

I love this song, baby loves this song. This is our smile-guaranteed song. I usually sing it when baby is on the changing mat but I also deploy it if I need to avert a crying session.

As well as the smiles she is learning about her body when I touch her head, shoulders, knees and toes. It will also help her when she starts learning to speak.

I like to do a big finish, final verse and substitute a rousing "cheese on toast" for the final "knees and toes". Well it makes us smile.

Sleigh Ride

Because it is Christmas and, where I am at least, snowy.

Baby loves Sleigh Ride
, we play it at least once a day and she goes jogging up and down on my knee. She loves it when we ride over bumps and she falls down or is jogged up in the air. A real giggle factory.

We play the Ronettes version from Phils Spector's A Christmas Gift for You album.
There are sliegh bells, hooves clip-clopping, everything you would want for a festive sleigh ride.

Moon River

Moon River is one of my favourite songs and I sing it as a lullaby to get my baby to sleep.
Perfect because it only has two verses and you can dum-de-dum it in between.

Moon River was written by Henry Mancini (music) and Johnny Mercer (Lyrics) in 1961 and appeared in Breakfast At Tiffanys, staring Audrey Hepburn.
Many great singers have recorded it, but my favourite is the original by Andy Williams
